The award-winning family winery commissioned the London-based, Italian artist Adalberto Lonardi to explore wine as a temporal object that connects generations, traditions and communities, ahead of Pasqua Wines’s centenary in 2025

For the second consecutive year, unconventional Verona based winery Pasqua Wines celebrates the Italian’s Embassy’s collaboration with Frieze by unveiling ‘Senza Tempo’ (Timeless): a site-responsive, large-scale textile piece informed by a palindromic poem by Veronese artist Adalberto Lonardi. The hand-embroidered abstract piece is inspired by the poetic meaning of time and the grandeur of the Embassy’s central staircase, in the heart of Mayfair, and will reside alongside tapestries dating back to the 1600s. Lonardi first collaborated with Pasqua Wines earlier this year in their shared hometown of Verona, to mark the leading Italian wine fair Vinitaly. His vibrant artistic intervention in the city, ‘A Love Letter to Verona’ was a 3D artwork which interacted with Pasqua Wines’s range of wines and encouraged local people to contribute with messages and reflections dedicated to Verona. The emerging talent is fast building a reputation for joyful and colour-rich public art installations across London, having unveiled two projects this year: ‘Everybody Champions’ a community-led collaboration with the Wimbledon Tennis Museum, and ‘Summer Family,’ a series of urban furniture decorations for Battersea Power Station.

As it approaches its centenary and strives to push boundaries in experimental winemaking, Pasqua Wines’s collaboration with Lonardi marks the winery’s long-standing commitment to arts patronage, rooted in its mission to provide talented creatives with dynamic platforms. Since 2018, the winery has invested over €5.5 million in artist collaborations with artists from all over the world and in patronage programmes related to the art world. As a matter of fact, Pasqua Wines, eager to export its passion for creativity, supported a two-month public exhibition of emerging eco-conscious photography and film at Saatchi Gallery earlier this year in Metamorphosis – the first time a wine producer had supported a major arts institution outside of Italy. The 10m x 3m “Senza Tempo” textile artwork features a stream of bold sinuous shapes, where the words of a palindromic poem written by Lonardi, run after each other, both upward and downward. Digitally printed, the artwork is enriched with chiffon, organza, velvet and silk insertion and finished with gold and silver appliqué. The colours of red, rosé, white, with accents of green and blue evoke both the colours of wine and the vineyard landscape.

Reflecting on the creative process which led to “Senza Tempo”, Lonardi explains: “I wanted the piece to be seen as an open dialogue exploring the interconnectedness of people, places, and emotions in life. Time, a theme rich with poetic meaning, played a central role in the process. I imagined an imposing, abstract textile work on the grand Embassy staircase that would both relate to and visually contrast with the surrounding historical tapestry artworks.” “The theme of time and connecting generations is a guiding thread and an important message in my works,” continued the artist, “and I wanted to translate that into this context, in a new and abstract version of my style.” Riccardo Pasqua, CEO of Pasqua Wines explains: “Wine embodies time itself: it is made of yesterday, today, and tomorrow. Every bottle holds history and vision, the knowledge passed down through generations, and a forward-looking perspective reflected in our commitment to crafting wines that stand the test of time, revealing their full expression as they mature and evolve. ‘Senza Tempo’ tells this message beautifully and it means a lot to us to anchor our gift to London’s Italian Embassy in Verona too. We much admire the Ambassador’s commitment to supporting Italy’s contribution to the arts scene overall is this great city.”

Italian Ambassador to the UK, Inigo Lambertini, shared: “Once again, the Italian Embassy in the UK opens its doors in the heart of Mayfair to celebrate Frieze and the success of Italian art in the contemporary scenario. Italy is recognized globally as a hub of art, and Frieze, the premier art fair in the UK and one of the most significant worldwide, provides an ideal platform for showcasing Italian talent. We are delighted that Pasqua Wines has commissioned a special artwork for our Embassy visitors to enjoy over the coming months and which celebrate two of our most important exports, and world-famous excellences: creativity and wine.” It has been a notable year for Pasqua Wines with the winery awarded ‘Innovator of the Year’ by US specialist title Wine Enthusiast – the first Italian winery to receive this honour. Its witty-ttitled, multi-vintage ‘Hey French’ will soon be available nationally as part of Majestic’s Christmas Fine Wine List. Majestic, the UK’s largest specialist wine retailer. Its Amarone della Valpolicella 2016 has also just received Tre Bicchieri from the Vini d’Italia 2025 guide by Gambero Rosso, confirming how much the most ambitious and radical project by Pasqua Wines for the interpretation of Amarone is now recognized as a great “timeless” wine. The same vintage also received 94 points from the Essential Guide to Italian Wines, the crown from Vini Buoni d’Italia, and the gold medal from Merano Wine Hunter.
